San Jose State University Apartment Rentals

Growing up near San Jose State University I knew that it was a commuter school and that the vast majority of students did not live on campus. The schools current rule is that if you graduated from a high school that is outside a 30 mile radius of SJSU, you are required to live on campus for your first year. Therefore, if you are reading this article and are an incoming freshman (under 21 years of age), check out the SJSU Undergrad Housing - page which goes over the various housing options (The Bricks, Joe West Hall, Campus Village Bldg C, Campus Village Bldg B). Get housing rates, availability, applications, and more. The campus at San Jose State is not that large so no matter which residence you get put into it should be easy to get around to your classes and all the events. The real issue with finding a rental apartment or house off-campus at SJSU is the insane housing costs that are in the Silicon Valley area. There are few areas in the United States with more expensive housing costs, so be prepared to spend at least $1000/month for a one bedroom apartment. Obviously sharing an apartment with another student is always a good idea if you want to save a few bucks. If you are looking for off-campus housing near San Jose State University, we suggest checking out the website HERE. The site offers up rooms in houses, shared housing with roommates, apartments and larger rental homes. Even a room in a house will set you back $400/month, so don't expect any bargains around the campus. Commuting is a part of student life here in San Jose, so perhaps living a bit further from school and the downtown area can save you a bit. Don't just search for rentals in the immediate area surrounding SJSU, look beyond to Almaden Valley, Blossom Hill, Sunnyvale, Campbell, etc. The campus runs from 4th to 10th street and goes from E. San Salvador St. to E. San Fernando Street. The Colonnade Apartments are a popular choice for those that want to walk to campus, although we suggest reading some reviews as those on Yelp.com aren't the best.

  • Campus Village Apartments - You will find these units on the Southeast corner of the SJSU campus. Single or double living options that are designed for upper division students and international students. .
  • Miraido Village Apartments - Apartment homes in the San Jose area at Jackson and 6th. Floor plans include studios, 1 bedrooms, and 2 bedroom units. Go to the website for floorplan layouts, directions, and amenities.
  • 101 San Fernando - With over 300 luxury flats to choose from, this complex is within a few blocks of campus and easy walking distance. Pricing is not cheap, studios are $1400 or more and 2 bedroom units are close to $2000. You are paying for the fact these are new flats and they are very close to SJSU.
  • Saybrooke Pointe - A little further out these apartments are out towards Blossom Hill Road but still a short commute into the university. You are near the light rail (VTA) and bus lines. Amenities include covered parking, pet friendly, complimentary Starbucks coffee and more. Address is 401 Briar Ridge Drive, San Jose, CA 95123.
  • The Grove Apartment Homes Located near San Jose City College on Fruitdale Ave, this place is ideal for junior college goers or those heading to San Jose State. You are just a few blocks from the city campus or the 280 freeway.

Property Management Near SJS University

The one thing that we hear all the time is that students don't have time to look at dozens of apartments or condos. Sure they need a place to stay, but the looking is time consuming and they would rather have someone else do it for them. We suggest using a property management company that specializes in things just like they. They often have multiple units they are trying to rent out or have contacts at the local apartment complexes and can help place you. Give them their criteria for amenities, rental budget, and preferred location, and you will often get a few good rentals to look at. Great resource if you are not familiar with the area and what the names of all the apartment complexes are. Property management companies are the perfect solution for those living off campus that want some help in their search for housing or rental apartments. Rents are expensive in San Jose, so finding the right fit for your needs may take a little while. Be patient and also check out Craigslist.org which is a great source for local rentals.
