Ohio State University Apartment Rentals

Trying to find housing off-campus at Ohio State University is a daunting task. There are over 50,000 students that attend the college so you can only imagine how fast apartment listings fill up near campus. There are several desirable neighborhoods around OSU - just south of campus are Dennison Place and Victorian Village, while Indian Forest and Old North Columbus are up on the east and north sides of the university. Colony Square Apartments are just a bit further north off of the 315 Highway. As with any housing near a campus like Ohio State University, you will want to view several apartments or condos before commiting to one in particular. We read dozens of reviews online for apartments that are withing walking distance to campus but the comments posted were terrible. There is no doubt that many apartment complexes near major universities are not the most up to date. Many owners tend to skimp on repairs and updates since they only have students living there temporarily. Our advice is to ask fellow students what their experiences are, get recommendations from the school housing committee, and hit the streets to view the apartments for rent yourself. Many college kids simply sign a lease without asking questions about things like parking, pets, utilities, noise issue, how are repairs handled, etc. If you don't ask, then you can't complain later. The best apartments should have friendly staffs, good repair times, and honest refunds for things like security deposits. Word of mouth goes a long way in small college towns. We have tried to provide some apartment communities that are close to campus down below. Always research any place before signing lease agreements.

  • Colony Square Apartments - Compared to other reviews, this complex got reasonably good feedback. The big drawback is that it's not as close to campus as other apartments. They offer 1 and 2 bedroom apartment units. For students, the rents are reasonable and you can still get to campus without too much hassle.
  • Ohio State Off-Campus Housing - Great resource for students looking to make the move from on-campus housing to off campus. They have 100's of listings for apartments that are located around campus. Rents being at about $250/month and go up from there. Each property is listed with photos, rent price, shows property type (apartment, rooming house, etc.) and they tell you whether pets are allowed or not. The location sector is what we like best, it gives you a quick idea of where the rental unit is at in vicinity to school.
  • Ohio State University Apartments - Nice selection of 1, 2, 3 bedroom and larger rental apartments or houses. Many of the listings show availability only in August as they are currently rented. This tells you the rental pool gets filled up fast so check out a property you like well in advance and get on their waiting list. Prices started at about $400 for a studio/efficiency while 2 bedroom rental apartments go for $600+. Location will have a lot to do with price, so the closer to campus the more expensive the rent.
  • OSU Campus Apartments - Well layed out website with listings for all types of apartments (organized by # of bedrooms). Some of the nicer single bedroom apartments rent for $700/month. .
  • Campus Apartment Rentals - Don't let the name fool you - the listings are for apartments near campus but not on campus. They offer listings in the West, North, and South OSU campus areas. A sample 2 bedroom apartment rents for $675-$725/month. Each apartment vacancy is listed with details of size, amenities, lease options, and they have mapping to guide you to the location.

Here are some more resources to aid in your apartment shopping:
Central Ohio Transit Authority - website for finding out about bus schedules, fares, connections, and passes in the Columbus area. All college students need this information.
Ohiot State University Transportation Page: Just what any student needs to know: information on campus parking, permit requirements, commuting/carpooling, CABS (Campus Area Bus Service), and more.
Rules for Renting a Condo: Condos are a little different..

Finding a House to Rent Near Ohio State Campus

Not all college students want to live in cramped apartments for 4 years. Some are more adventurous and feel like living in a rental house is a great solution. If you have reliable friends, then renting a house near Ohio State University can be a good thing. Keep in mind that probably one of the parents will have to sign the lease and be responsible for all the others that are living in the house. In some cases multiple parents are required to sign off. Sharing a house that is near the university is great - you get to have roommates you like and in most situations your monthly rent will be much less per person than if you lived alone. Where should you start your search? We say try using a property management company. They are in the business of renting out houses and should be familiar with all neighborhoods around the Ohio State campus. You just need to tell them how many bedrooms, how close to campus you need to be, and details like parking requirements, lease terms, and pets and they can compile a list of possible rentals you can look at. We suggest starting with agencies like Buckeye Real Estate or Hometeam Properties.
  • Buckeye Real Estate - They are located at 48 East 15th Ave, Columbus, OH 43201. You can get 7 bedroom houses from their listings - that's probably a bigger commitment than most people want, but they do have plenty of 4 and 5 bedroom properties for rent as well. .
  • Cooper Properties - We like their selection of 4 and 5 bedroom rental homes. Prices start at roughly $1600/month and go up for the 4 bedroom homes. Their website lets you know which ones are already taken for Fall and which ones are still available. If you are looking for a 1 bedroom, this is not the place. .
  • OSU Premier Properties - Great listing of rental properties on Wyandotte Ave, Summit Street, and Maynard Avenue. Rents for 3 bedroom homes are about $1000/month while a few of their 5 bedroom rental houses go for $1800+. Website is loaded with photos, updates, and availability listings so you don't waste your time.
  • Ohio State Properties - Looking for a nice selection of homes for rent, this is your place. They list several on East Patterson, E. Maynard, East Northwood, Summit St. and Tulane. Most houses work out to about $400/each when you break down the rent per person. Check for availability before you email or call the property managers.
  • Hometeam Properties - Need something in the Central Campus location, these guys may have it. Good selection of 2 and 3 bedroom units near the campus - some are newer units which may cost a bit more. Their leasing office is at 222 East Eleventh Ave., Columbus, Ohio 43201. They have roughly 100 rental properties to choose from around the campus.
