You've got close to 50,000 students all looking for housing in East Lansing, MI each year as Michigan State college students go back to school. Finding an apartment near MSU campus will take some work on your part, that is if you care where you live. Off campus housing fills up fast, especially the cleaner, newer apartment complexes that are within walking or biking distance to Michigan State. The Department of Student Life offers an off campus housing listing service (find at http://www.studentlife.msu.edu/parents/housing.htm). It's a great place to start your search and see what pricing is like along with availability. They also have a Housing Fair at the MSU Union each year that helps students find potential rentals near and around the campus. The best source for student rental apartments and houses close to the MSU campus is at Hudginsrealty.com. They are specialized in helping college students find the perfect fit for their housing needs. Their website is constantly updated with openings on streets like Albert, Kedzie Street, Ann Street, Division, Gunson, and many more. Choose from houses, duplexes, and apartments for rent. Many students like that these rental properties are close proximity to MSU, have parking, and deal with property maintenance. The biggest complaints we read online from students in apartments during their college years were things like - management tricks them into leases or doesn't give back full deposits. Don't sign any lease agreement until you have discussed the lease terms with your parents or an adult.

  • East Lansing Rent - Want a broad selection of apartments or houses to rent, this website is like a Craigslist with dozens of postings - many by management companies that deal with larger apartment communities. One bedroom apartments are $500 to $700. We found some 3 bedroom townhomes listed for about $1200/month which would drastically reduce each persons rent if you can find people to share housing with.
  • DTN Management - Probably not a better site in terms of apartment selection. Choose from Auburn Place Apartments, Campus Hill Apartments, Woodside South, and dozens more. Each apartment complex is listed with a map and details of floor plans, parking, lease terms, etc.
  • Hunt Club Apartments - Nicer apartments (more like homes) with 1, 2, 3, and 4 bedroom models. Prices start at $675 and go up towards $1100/month for 4 bedrooms. Once again if you can handle shared housing, you can save lots of money each month. Key amenities include a pool with sundeck, sand volleyball court, central A/C, washer/dryer, and a fitness center. Easy access to Michigan State University is a plus.
  • Club Meridian Apartments - Just to the southeast of campus, these apartments are nice. One and 2 bedroom apartment layouts, perfect for student living with outdoor pool, tennis courts, walk-in closets, and washer/dryers. Although some mention that rents are higher than average for the area, most agree that it's worth it. Plenty of reviews posted online to read.
  • Arbor Forest Apts - Very close to campus - easily within walking distance. Offers 1 and 2 bedroom floorplans with rents at about $750/month for a 2 bedroom 2 bath unit. Near the Red Cedar Natural Area and Municipal Park.

Finding a House to Rent Near Michigan State Campus

We strongly suggest working with a property management company when searching for housing. They tend to list multiple properties giving you the widest selection possible. Talk with 2 or 3 of them to get the best rentals available. Instead of having to fill out 15 applications, you can fill out one and have them do the leg work for you. Housing is scarce near campus and those that are available tend to be filled quickly, especially before the school year even begins. You need to determine just how far from campus you are willing to live. How many roommates do you want? The cost per person on a 4 bedroom rental house is pretty cheap if you can handle it. Whose parent will sign on the lease taking responsibility? These are all questions that need to be answered before you start looking. Also, do you want be north, south, west, or east of campus? Start with a company like Cron Management which offers up all sorts of rental apartments, homes for rent, duplexes, condos, etc. Their prime locations are right across from the MSU campus and in downtown East Lansing. RoomSimple is another good resource for rental houses near Michigan State University. The people behind the company are former students at MSU and U of Michigan. They know the area and can help students find appropriate housing.
  • Cron Management - You can find the at 117 Center Street, East Lansing, Michigan, 48823. Search their online listings of studios, 1 bedrooms, 2 bedrooms, and larger rental houses. View floor plans, read descriptions of each property, look at photos, and check out pricing.
  • Community Resource Management Co - Eventhough their houses for rent near MSU fill up fast, it's never too early to fill out an application and get your name on the list. The website allows you to search for availability via housing type, blocks to MSU, roommate #, or city area. Off campus living can be great if you stay organized in your rental search.
  • Room Simple - Nothing better than having former students help in your search. They know the ins and outs of renting in this area and offer up 10 houses for rent. The cheapest of the bunch starts at $1200/month and that gets you a 3 bedroom 1 bath house. Their largest rental hosue is 6 bedrooms but you would be sharing a single bath.
  • Musselman Realty - Our last group offers up rental apartments in East Lansing - one on Spartan Avenue and the other set on Oak Street. Rents are not listed - contact Jim to see what is available.
